Wuhan - A Tale of Three Cities
Once upon a time there was Hanyang, Hankou, and Wuchang. Hanyang was a busy port for 3,000 years, while Hankou, located nearby, was the busiest inland port but forced to deal in opium after China lost the Opium Wars. It was also carved it up into different foreign concessions. Wuchang, meanwhile, led an uprising known as the Xinhai Revolution that led to the overthrow of the last dynasty to rule China. Now they all live happily together as Wuhan city.
With a history going back 3,500 years, this place on the Yangtze and Hanjing Rivers is central China’s military, economic, transport and political hub. With extreme temperatures, it’s also known as one of the ‘three furnaces’. Visit it only during spring or autumn.
Snake Hill Park with yellow Crane Tower is Wuhans most attractive site and entry is ticketed. The park also has a Mao Pavilion with the chairman’s poems etched in stone. This well landscaped park has several other buildings including a tea house with regular performances of Chu-era music. Though free, you are encouraged to patronize the tea shop and spend a bit of cash.
Yellow Crane Tower sits atop Snake Hill and is one of four such towers in China. Whether one believes in reincarnation or not, this is the 12th reincarnation of the 223AD Tower and this version was built quite recently (1980’s). The view from the top is very impressive and you can see the Yangtze as well as the mouth of the Hanjing River and the whole city on clear days.
