The Rough Guide to Croatia

Croatia Travel Guide

Croatia is a small country on the opposite coast of Adriatic Sea from Italy. With just over 4 million people, it ranks high on International Tourism because of its long sunny coastline, places of historic interest and economical cost.

The country has had a very turbulent past and this has resulted in a large number of forts and fortifications. Located in south-central Europe, it’s ideal for tourists during summer.

Dubrovnik, the capital is on the Dalmatian coast and has walls that are 20ft. thick and 82 ft. high in some places and they surround the old town. These fortifications were built in the 13th, 14th and 15th century to protect it from attacks by the Othman Empire. History aside, the place has fantastic cuisine and warm sunny beaches. Another attraction not to be missed is the cable car. Take it to the top (cost 60% of round trip) and walk leisurely downhill.

Many of the locations in Dubrovnik were used as locations for the very popular T.V. serial ‘Game of Thrones’. You can take a guided walking tour to explore them. The tour starts at the Pile Square, which is also a UNESCO heritage site. Your guide will also fill you in about the local history along with GoT lore.

The War Photo Limited museum off Stradun, old town center, is set up to expose the intoxication of war and show the real horror of war. A visit here can be a highly emotional experience; if you are very sensitive go with a companion or avoid.

The split is the second largest city of Croatia situated on the Adriatic coast and has beaches and historical buildings. Unlike Dubrovnik, this city is not fixated on the past and the medieval palace with its labyrinthine alleys has chic restaurants, modern shops, and bars.

Some attractions of Split are the old town with cobbled lanes and narrow streets. This is a pedestrian-only area and has a number of restaurants, cafes, and shops. The Roman Emperor Diocletian's Palace, more like a fortified fort than a palace is the center of the old town. Most nights you can enjoy live music at the square known as the Peristyle of Diocletian's Palace.

The Roman Emperor Diocletian was famous for persecuting the Christians; today his octagonal mausoleum is the Cathedral of St. Domnius and one of the best-preserved examples of Roman architecture.

Tips to save money: If you plan to spend time on the beaches, carry a packed lunch from the local bakeries and an empty wine bottle that you can refill at any vino with the local wine.

You need a day or two to see each town. Many tourists move to places along the coast where it’s much cheaper. Lapad Bay outside Dubrovnik is one such great option.

Time is of the essence and you can save both time and money and avoid unnecessary aggravation by booking now. Carrying forex for the trip will be easy; buy a Centrum multi-currency card loaded with what you require. It is the most convenient and economical way to carry and spend money abroad. Buying travel insurance is always a good idea too. Croatia
