Kenya can be hot and humid on the coast but in the highlands it’s temperate. In northern region of the country it can get very dry and hot. Nairobi and other highland towns can be chilly between June and August. Western Kenya
Maasai Mara National Reserve-This game reserve named after the Maasai tribe is unrivalled; with almost 600 sq. miles under protection, its abundance of wild life will surprise you. To fully appreciate it, spend 2 or 3 days here. The annual wildebeest migration from Maasai Mara to the Serengeti happens in August/ September.
Amboseli National Reserve is the best place to view herds of wild elephants up close. Other animals found here are lions, cheetah, waterbuck, gazelle as well as giraffe, impala, eland.
Nairobi is Kenya’s capital and largest city. Once it was the capital of British East Africa. Some interesting places to visit here are the Nairobi National Museum, Karen Blixen Museum and the Giraffe Centre along with Giraffe Manor where it’s possible to hand feed the giraffes.
Mombasa is a cultural mix of African, European and Asian-mainly Indian and Arab- influences; this is reflected in its architecture and cuisine. Mombasa is an island but connected by bridges and causeways to the mainland, it offers fantastic diving and snorkeling opportunities as well.
Lamu is a small island north of Mombasa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Old Town Lamu has its origins in the 12th century and is the oldest continually inhabited settlement in Kenya. Stepping into this town is like going back in time; there are few motorized vehicles, donkeys rule the roads and dhows plow the port.
Lake Naivasha is at the highest point of the Great Rift Valley and a haven for birders to spot some of the 400 bird species that live here. The best way to explore this lake and its surroundings is by boat.
Hell’s Gate National Park, south of Lake Naivasha is rich in wildlife and has two extinct volcanoes; red cliffs of Hell’s Gate Gorge; Obsidian Caves and a volcanic plug known as Fischer’s Tower. It has geothermal springs and natural geysers. This park is relatively affordable and offers climbing and camping opportunities. The Olkaria Geothermal Station located here generates power from naturally heated underground water.
