Belgrade isn’t a city you can call beautiful but it has vitality and raw energy that more than compensates. Its nightlife really buzzes and the pedestrian boulevard of Knez Mihailova stretches all the way from Republic Square to the Kalemegdan Park and the Kalemegdan Citadel. Lined with shops, restaurants, galleries and important institutions, this is the city’s artery where you will return again and again.
Kalemegdan Citadel situated on the confluence of the Danube and the Sava was fought over 115 times and destroyed 40 times. The origins of the fort go back to the Celtic era; it was then extended during the Roman period. The fort that exists today was largely reconstructed by the Ottomans and the Austro-Hungarian rulers. Nowadays, its bloody history is concealed by cheerful cafes and laughing tourists.
Originally, Belgrade existed within the Kalemegdan Citadel’s walls. Some of the attractions within are the Clock Tower, the Military Museum, Ali Pasha’s tomb, Roman Wells. The downhill way to the river will take you to the Gunpowder Magazine, old Turkish baths, and 2 churches and the Nebojsa Tower. Audio guides are available and admission is free.
Museum of Yugoslavia is a priceless collection about the history of the region especially Yugoslavia. You can book an English speaking guide or join a free guided tour on the weekends. Marshall Tito, who ruled Yugoslavia during Nehru’s time has his Mausoleum, which is also a museum on the same grounds and the ticket price includes both.
Nikola Tesla Museum is dedicated to the great inventor; some regard him as a bigger genius than Edison. The place has a lot of interactive displays that will test your intelligence and knowledge. Tesla’s ashes are also kept here in a glowing orb and displayed.
Zepter Museum is right on the Knez Mihailova promenade, housed in an impressive building. The building’s interior serves as a perfect showcase for the varied styles of art displayed here. Besides the permanent display of Serbian art, the gallery also hosts temporary exhibitions.
Great War Island is at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers; at one time an important defensive position but now a peaceful wilderness where many locals have built shacks. During summer there’s a temporary bridge erected, if not, you can visit it by boat.
